Mentorship is important

When I left my hometown to move out west, there wasn’t much of a writing community to leave behind. The only writing event I had found was a luncheon hosted by Dorothy Dearborn, a popular local fiction writer, who hosted a monthly lunch for PWAC. Officially, I couldn’t be a member because I hadn’t been published yet, but they took me under their wing to help me along my journey.

After moving to Vancouver, I became part of several writing groups. Some professional, some more amateur. I thrived as a writer and learned so much from those ahead of me and then I helped those coming along behind. Returning to Saint John, I came across a bookstore in a cruise ship tourist area which specialized in local New Brunswick and Nova Scotia authors. The rest, shall we say is history.

Now, I attend regular writing and editing related events twice a week. I’ve done presentations (both paid and volunteer) about the writing process, editing and marketing.

This past week, I received notification of the highlight in the image for this post. One of the younger authors who is just beginning the publishing part of her journey has written the above thank you to me. (Also a great marketing tactic for both of us). To say I am thrilled is an understatement.

Over the years, two marriages and a hundreds of friendships, I’ve learned my love language is care and appreciation. This made me cry in the best ways.
